What is a Forest Kindergarten?

What is a forest kindergarten, you may ask? Forest kindergarten is an educational approach that takes place entirely outdoors, where children are immersed in nature and free to explore, play, and learn in a natural setting. At Kikanasu, we believe that children are natural learners who thrive in a stimulating and nurturing environment.

We focus on emergent curriculums, which means that children's interests, experiences, and interactions with their environment guide their learning. We believe that every child is unique and that their learning should reflect their individuality. Our program is designed to help children develop their self-confidence, independence, creative abilities, and love for learning.

At Kikanasu, we believe that children who spend time in nature are more likely to develop a sense of wonder and awe for the world around them. They are more likely to develop a strong sense of connection to nature, which can lead to a more profound sense of environmental responsibility.

The Benefits of Spending Time in Nature

Spending time in nature can lead to many benefits for children, including improved cognitive function, enhanced creativity, and increased attention spans. Time spent in nature can also lead to a reduction in stress levels and a boost in the immune system. At Kikanasu, we provide a safe and nurturing environment where children can engage with nature and experience the wonder and beauty of the natural world.

Our program is designed to foster a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around them, while also promoting their social, emotional, and physical development. Through free play and exploration, children develop their physical skills, such as balance, coordination, and agility. They also develop their emotional skills, such as self-esteem, and resilience. Social skills are also developed through the interactions with other children and adults, fostering empathy, cooperation, and communication skills.

The Power of Language

We also believe in the power of language to connect people and cultures. That's why we offer a bilingual approach to forest kindergarten. During each session, we incorporate an English lesson that is accessible to all children, regardless of their level of English. Children are free to interact in the way of their choosing and use their preferred language for the entire day. No English experience is necessary.

Our sessions run from 10:00-15:00 and are generally held at our center in Sakegawa. However, we also occasionally travel around Yamagata prefecture to explore new and exciting outdoor locations. We play in forests, mountains, rivers, oceans, in the sun, rain, or snow. We believe that nature has so much to offer and that every child deserves to experience the wonders of the natural world.
